Securus To Shame Global Tel Link By Publishing Prior Wrongdoings
The first in a series of articles to be published by Securus Technologies regarding the Global Tel Link (GTL) wrongdoing was published on June 7. Securus Technologies is a for-profit prison technology company located in Dallas, TX. The wrongdoings by GTL occurred in 1998 and prior. As the company provides civil and criminal justice technology solutions, namely telephone service to US prison inmates, this was an exceptional fluke affecting both inmates and taxpayers alike. Securus Technologies is now releasing their findings as to the potential missteps taking by GTL in an effort to shame the inmate communications provider into operating with better integrity in the future.
The first press release features an order from the Louisiana Public Service Commission (PSC) about the actions of the GTL and some of their unlawful and unauthorized practices. Many of these actions resulted in the overcharge of Louisiana taxpayers by amounts totaling more than $1.25 million. This occurred by way of increasing the duration of inmates calls by 15-36 seconds, inflating call charges, billing a single call multiple times, and other unlawful practices. Despite this illegal and dishonest behavior occurring approximately 18 years ago, the Louisiana Public Service Commission (PSC) is still furious regarding the actions of the GTL when the served the Louisiana Department of Corrections by providing outgoing telephone services to thousands of convicts.
